A provincially respected advocate, Ben Smith has stood at the forefront of education policy in Ontario, advocating for the needs of Ontario's 2 million students in our publicly funded education system.
Ben is proud to serve as the Chief Executive Officer of the Ontario Student Trustees Association. OSTA-AECO is an active partner in Ontario’s Education system and the largest student stakeholder group in Ontario, representing over 2.2 million students. Our General Assembly is comprised of student trustees from public and catholic school boards across Ontario. Members of the association work tirelessly throughout the year to advocate for student voice, and strive to work with our partners in government and otherwise to improve Ontario’s education system for our students.
After serving as the President of the Catholic Board Council, OSTA-AECO's Catholic education wing, Ben is looking forward to providing strategic direction, advice, governance and leadership at the provincial level. Ben advises the Executive Council, OSTA-AECO's main governing body on strategic decisions and facilitates meetings and discussions with senior government official. He also aids in the planning and organization of three annual conferences for members. In addition, Ben serves as an ex-officio member of the Board of Directors and is involved in the legal and fiscal decisions of the organization.
Over the years, Ben has lend his voice to multiple Ministry of Education committees and working groups including the Healthy Schools working table, Community Planning and Partnerships reference group, Transformation Steering Committee and the Ministry's Partners in Dialogue conference. He also has collaborated with the Ministry of Advanced Education and Skills Development serving as a judge on their Student Pathways Challenge and also serves as a member of the Accessibility Directorate of Ontario's K-12 Education Standards Development Committee, developing Ontario's first accessibility standard in education.
